Owner & educator with decades of experience 

I am passionate about creating better ways to strengthen students’ literacy skills. Too often, struggling learners fall through the education cracks and lack the confidence and ability to keep up. That’s where I can help!

With decades of experience in the educational system, I now teach privately and also mentor parents to understand how they can best help their children reach their highest, reading potential.

PRIVATE
TUTORING

One-on-one face-to-face teaching with direct and appropriate feedback in the mobile Literacy Clinic. Each learner is allocated a dedicated 75 minutes per week.

SMALL GROUP TUTORING

Limited to a maximum of two students per group. Your child will be paired with another student working at an equivalent level. Subject to availability.

PARENT/CARER TRAINING

A short course for parents if one-on-one child centred tutoring is not for you. Our parent/carer training will teach you how to best support a struggling reader.

Frequently Asked Questions

Phonics simply teaches how the English alphabetic code is truly phonic, that it is based on the sounds of our speech. In our language we have 44 sounds and approximately 175 ways to represent those sounds. Old School Phonics teaches phonics in a systematic and strategic way beginning with what the learner already knows. I isolate a starting point and begin to build from there in manageable chunks so that the learner never feels overwhelmed or out of their depth. An important part of learning with Old School Phonics is the provision of scaffolded support to assist the learner on their journey and have them experience success.

This support will come in many forms:

  • the way errors are corrected to aid learning.
  • the physical gestures I use to draw the learner’s focus.
  • the decodable texts I provide.
  • the variety of lessons and games that are meaningful, relevant and multisensory.
  • the follow-up, at-home activities supplied each week.
  • the familiar lessons and activities that free up cognitive space enabling the learner to focus on the lesson content.
  • the explicit teaching and unambiguous language used throughout.

Basically, I teach three concepts and four skills. The concepts that sounds can be represented by 1-4 letters, a sound can be spelt more than one way and that the same spelling can represent more than one sound. While teaching these concepts I help develop the skills of segmenting sounds, blending sounds, manipulating phonemes and using strategies for encoding and decoding multi-syllable words.

An evidence-based, structured, phonics program is helpful for all children, harmful to none and absolutely crucial for some.
